Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) has proposed Alessandro Melzi d’Eril, CEO of fund manager Anima Holding, as the new chief of Mediobanca, following MPS’s takeover last month.
The €16B ($19B) stock-and-cash deal faced initial investor skepticism due to the banks’ differing sizes and business models. Melzi d’Eril, 50, succeeds Alberto Nagel, who led Mediobanca for 17 years, and will work alongside new Chairman Vittorio Grilli, former Italian Economy Minister and seasoned JPMorgan banker.
A descendant of a noble Milanese family, Melzi d’Eril brings deep expertise in wealth management, aligning with Mediobanca’s core focus. Grilli’s investment banking experience complements the bank’s corporate activities, while consumer finance remains under the guidance of MPS CEO Luigi Lovaglio, supporting Mediobanca’s Compass brand expansion.
